We’ll also resell NBN services – VIVIDwireless
TD-LTE demonstrated in Sydney
VIVIDwireless, the Perth-based 4G operator which yesterday demonstrated its use of Huawei TD-LTE kit in Sydney, told journalists it would probably become an NBN reseller when the national fibre network was rolled out.
Answering questions after the company had shown files downloading at better than 100 Mbps (on, to be fair, a lighly-loaded pilot network), CEO Martin Mercer said he regarded fixed and mobile networks as complementary to each other.
“We can envisage being an NBN customer, so as to support customers that want both mobile and fixed connections,” Mercer said.
Mercer said the company has sufficient spectrum to blanket 90 per cent of Sydney’s population (as well as other capital cities) with a service able to deliver symmetrical 40 Mbps speeds. The company is now working on funding the rollout, with Mercer saying the network should be completed within 12 months of funding.
Sydney would be served by around 240 base stations at launch, he said, with another hundred planned to be installed over the following twelve to eighteen months.
While the network is able to support high-definition video, Mercer said that delivering “lots of video content to small screens is a big opportunity”. ®
