Kaminario drops DRAM SSD pricing drawers

Raises capacity knickers

Kaminario, which supplies DRAM-based solid state drives, has dropped its entry-level pricing and raised its maximum capacity.

When introduced in June last year its K2 DRAM product cost $200,000 for a 500GB entry-level version with two I/O directors, and scaled up to 1.25TB. The big box supplied 1.5 million IOPS and 16GB/sec bandwidth, with the starter box offering 300,000 IOPS and and 3.2GB/sec.

Now a second generation product has the 500GB starter box pricing dropped to $50,000 and the maximum capacity raised to 12TB. The 500GB product does 150,000 IOPS and 1.6GB/sec, half that of the previous entry-level product, suggesting that an I/O director has been cut to enable the price drop.

The 12TB product screams along at 1.5 million IOPS and 16GB/sec. The market is the same as before: in-memory databases and datasets that need the fastest-possible response and currently suffer from I/O bottlenecks choking their performance. In effect the K2 DRAM product is an in-memory storage area network (SAN) for a single database with N+1 high-availability. ®
