Nimbula floats 'instamatic' cloud builder

Ex-Amazon man offers your very own Amazon

Nimbula – the build-your-own-cloud outfit founded by a former vice president of engineering at Amazon – has officially released Nimbula Director, its "cloud operating system".

This includes a free version of the product, which is limited to server clusters of 40 or fewer processing cores. You can download the free version from nimbula.com.

Nimbula Director is designed to mimic Amazon's AWS "infrastructure cloud" inside your private data center. It's a "private cloud" platform. Installed on bare metal servers, it provides on-demand access to readily scalable computing resources, including processing power, storage, and networking.

"We want everything to be automated from the first time the infrastructure is turned on," Nimbula CEO and former Amazon man Chris Pinkham has told The Register. "We hope that this will be a significant contribution, change the way that traditional infrastructure is managed and thought of. We think of it as infrastructure-as-a-service out of the box."

The platform is compatible with both Xen and KVM hypervisors, and it include a REST (representational state transfer) API. It also maps this API to Amazon's, letting you move workloads between the two platforms. According to Pinkham, the company plans to plug into other public cloud services in similar ways.

if you use Nimbula Director with more than 40 processing cores, you pay the company an annual subscription, and this includes maintenance and support services. ®
