Apple cloud strategy changes with the weather

Looking to recruit cloud engineers... or not

Apple is looking to build up its cloud computing engineering team. Or maybe not.

A discreet ad looking for a cloud engineer was spotted yesterday by Apple Insider.

The ad, as reproduced by Apple Insider, calls for a "cloud systems software engineer" for a "full time" position in which the successful candidate(s) will get to "explore the far reaches of the possible by joining the team building the future of cloud services at Apple".

Well, that's what it said earlier this week.

By this morning, the job title had morphed to Web Services Software Engineer and the description had become longer, if slightly duller, asking candidates to:

"Consider joining a small team writing the software which forms the foundation for some of our most exciting new products and services."

It asks for "an extremely capable engineer who has a strong background in web services development, and who has built high-performance, scalable and extensible systems".

Be warned: "In this highly visible position, the successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to define and implement some of the the company's core backend platform frameworks and systems."

Apple doesn't seem to think it takes too long to pick up that kind of experience, asking for just a minimum of two years experience doing the above.

Experience of RDBMS is required, with "Oracle a plus".

Which is about as much detail as Apple is prepared to divulge on exactly what it's doing in the cloud. Or is that web services?

Apple's North Carolina data centre is due to fire up soon, but other than a souped-up MobileMe and streaming iTunes, no one seems to have much of a clue exactly what Apple plans to do. Which is just as well, as Apple doesn't seem to be totally sure its getting into the cloud anyway. ®
