Reg ed rattles the Red-Headed League

He's one o'them self-hatin' gingers

FoTW Our editor Joe Fay usually keeps a pretty low profile, but earlier this week he stuck his resolutely brunette bonce* above the parapet with this piece about a shouty Steve Jobs and MobileMe.

One carrot top was prompted to protest:

Joe, I am curious why you chose "like a red headed stepchild" as a description for Apples feeling toward mobileme. If you would be so kind as to; a) tell me what that cliché means to you. & b) Would you ever use "he stood out like a [racist epithet] at an all white diner" to get your point across? As a "redhead" I am offended by your remark. I once had a Boss who not only was a great mentor but also a good friend once say in mixed company to me. " I would rather be dead then red on the head like a dick on a Dog" everybody laughed and as much as I tried to save him he was fired from his 150k (15 years ago salary) per year job. Please choose your naritives more carfully.

Thanks

Down in the Reg reader mosh pit, meanwhile, Francis Fish asked: "Can we stop that redheaded stepchild crap?"

He added: "Just because English people are scared of celts, doesn't make it ok. It's still racism. Bet you wouldn't say 'black stepchild'".

Quite right. Suffice it to say, Mr Fay has been dispatched to the naughty step to consider his own ethnic origins the next time he's supping Guinness at a lively céilidh surrounded by his 7000 Irish cousins.

While he's there, the news team is taking the opportunity to skive off to the pub to consider just what is the collective noun for a carful of redheads... ®

*Well, in most lights.
