Mexican narco attempts suitcase jailbreak
Visiting girlfriend pulled over improbable weight of 'underwear'
A member of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel looks likely to be serving at least part of his 20-year jail sentence with his girlfriend, after she unsuccessfully attempted to smuggle him out of chokey in a suitcase.
Juan Ramírez Tijerina's squeeze, María del Mar Arjona Rivero, paid him a visit last Saturday at the Centro de Rehabilitación Social (aka the "Cereso") in Chetumal, on the Yucatán Peninsula.
As the 19-year-old was leaving with a suitcase she claimed was full of "dirty underwear", officers became suspicious at the improbable weight of her baggage. A quick inspection revealed an impressively folded Ramírez Tijerina inside, as you can see here.
Ramírez Tijerina was cuffed back in 2007 as he was unloading the aformentioned nose Ajax from a light aircraft which had flown to the Yucatán Peninsula from Colombia.
He is, according to the authorities, a "very dangerous" inmate who forms part of the prison's "self-government". This body of lags controls drugs, prostitution, intoxicating liquor, protection rackets, extortion, and bribing cops and prison officers.
Ms Arjona Rivero was arrested for the not-so-cunning suitcase ruse, and is facing charges in what appears to be an open and shut (no, I can't do it – I'll leave it to the Sun...) ®
