Facebook, Twitter: Doing better than before Google+

Swelled visitor numbers in July ... bitch

The demise of Facebook appears to have been much exaggerated, as July saw the social network's highest ever unique visitor numbers, according to comScore.

There were 162 million visitors to the site in July, compared to 161 million in June and 157 million in May.

Some pundits had already decided that Facebook's days were numbered after the release of Google+ in May.

Others even went so far as to suggest that the new network would be enough to topple Twitter as well, but that was also looking unlikely as the Twitterverse enjoyed a record 33 million unique visitors, up from just under 31 million in June and 27 million in May.

Google sites are not listed separately in comScore's measure, but Plus is known to have around 27 million users, compared to Facebook's 500 million.

Still, it's early days yet for the search giant's third attempt to lure social network users, after both Google Wave and Google Buzz proved unpopular. And as many are keen to point out, Facebook had mere thousands in its opening months... ®
