Acer restructure continues as another honcho heads out

Semmy Levit 'will pursue personal goals' - leaked memo

Restructuring at Acer continues with another high level director exiting the business in the wake of its inventory woes and declining sales.

The firm parted with CEO Gianfranco Lanci in March and then began initiating an operational re-jig during the summer, creating three divisions: consumer, professional and Touch.

Among the high level heads that have since left the business are former Packard Bell CEO Aymar de Lencquesaing and Gianpiero Morbello, corporate veep of marketing and former Acer UK MD.

In a note to country managers, Acer president Walter Deppeler confirmed the exit of Levit, who was one-time UK boss, regional director for northwest Europe and latterly head of Italy, Greece, Israel and Nordics.

"After almost 12 years with Acer, Semmy has decided to leave the company to seek new challenges and pursue personal goals," said Deppeller in the memo leaked to El Reg.

Industry sources however alleged that Levit was asked to leave Acer as he was seen as part of the old guard which helped to create the inventory glut that has plagued the business in 2011 and won it few friends in distribution.

"He was a great sales guy but as a director made too many promises to the channel that he could not keep and eventually ran out of space. You have got to keep your word in the channel. There were lots of trust issues," said one insider.

The new Acer plans to run a much tighter ship and is already investigating shipping kit by rail as well as by sea to build greater flexibility into its global supply chain and react to market slowdowns more nimbly.

Deppeler confirmed that Luca Rossi, regional director at Acer, will "act for the region". ®
