HP axes up to 525 webOS hardware staff

Tech titan also mulling over PC division's fate

HP is laying off up to 525 staff from its global webOS hardware biz, according to reports.

The tech titan confirmed last month it is shuttering the unit that produced the ill-fated TouchPad and Pre3 devices.

“As communicated on 18 August, HP will discontinue the development of webOS devices within the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011, which ends 31 Oct 2011,” an HP spokesperson told AllThingsD in the US.

The webOS platform team has been moved into the Office of Strategy and Technology as HP decides what to do with them long term.

The vendor refused to reveal the exact number of departures, but sources told the publication that up to 525 heads may roll.

HP added:

During this time, we stand by our commitment to our webOS customers and will work to ensure that support and service for customers are not adversely affected. HP is exploring ways to leverage webOS software.

The vendor is also mulling over options for its Personal Systems Group, which included selling it off, keeping it or, as seems most likely, spinning it off and even potentially maintaining the HP brand.

HP EMEA was unable to comment at the time of going to press. ®
