Brits not keen on 3D, reveals poll

But they'll happily be told they have to watch it, anyway

Reg Hardware readers last year voted 3DTV the Rusty Dodo in the Reg Hardware Awards, and it seems Brits aren't too keen on the technology when its used in the cinema, either.

Pollster YouGov this week revealed that 41 per cent of punters - it interviewed just under 3000 of us - think that 3D is just a gimmick.

Some 47 per cent said 3D either does nothing for a film or makes it worse. Only 22 per cent stating the technology improves the cinemagoing experience, though only 19 per cent said it actually gives the film itself a boost.

Despite this, there's a certain ambivalence among the British public - clearly we're becoming a nation of fence-sitters - when it comes to picking which version of a film to see.

Given a choice of seeing a film in 2D or 3D, 47 per cent said they'd choose 3D, but only 37 per cent said they'd pick the 2D option. There was no resounding vote in favour of avoiding 3D because it costs more, either.

So, yes, 3D doesn't do anything for the film, and it costs more but we'll let the cinema chains shove us into 3D viewings anyway.

More of us would be keener on 3D if it didn't require glasses, but only 52 per cent - again, hardly a ringing endorsement. Some 40 per cent don't care one way or t'other.
