Dreadful ditty makes line noise sound like Mozart

Nokia has selected a winning ringtone, and either we're way too old to understand what the young things are listening to these days or Nokia has lost it completely.

The competition asked people to play around with the iconic Nokia tones and produce something new and interesting, and there are some really good entries, but to our ears the winning one sounds just a cacophony of noise at best, and an irritating screech at worst.

Here at Vulture Towers we don't claim to be shooting the breeze with the cool cats on a daily basis, despite being dangerously close to Soho, and we're not particularly hip to the young scene or down with the kids. It is perhaps the oldest cliché that modern music is just random noise – but really ... this time it is.

Our own favourite, The Great Marvellous, was a finalist by virtue of gathering almost 40,000 public votes. But unsurprisingly the "professional jury" pushed it into 10th place and selected the "Dubstep Edition" as the tone which will grace "a selection of the company 2012 product portfolio".

The winner pockets $10,000, the five runners up get a grand each, and The Great Marvellous gets nothing.

Younger readers might like to have a listen and rail against our lack of taste. Perhaps this new direction is just what Nokia needs. ®
