Datacom, Revera expanding NZ cloud

Gummint contract spurs data centre builds

Datacom is to build a new data centre after sharing a New Zealand government contract with IBM and Revera.

The company is to become a supplier of cloud and data centre services to New Zealand, and has announced Hamilton as the home for its new Tier 3 data centre to support the win.

Its ten-year contract is with a cross-government programme led by the Department of Internal Affairs. Datacom already has data centres in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The new Hamilton facility will go live in 2013, and meanwhile, its existing centres will be home to Datacom Cloud Services for Government, to go live within 90 days.

All NZ government agencies will be able to access the infrastructure-as-a-service offering, with their access portal secured by the ‘igovt’ identity service. The four-year-old ID-and-authentication service, which provides access to 33 services across 13 agencies, recently won an innovation award in New Zealand.

The contract is also a win for Datacom’s vendors, which include Cisco, EMC, HP, IBM, NetApp, Symantec and VMWare.

The NZ government IaaS plans span three vendors. According to TechDay, Revera has also been signed to provide cloud services, and the government is in negotiations with IBM as the third provider.

As with Datacom, Revera is expanding its infrastructure in the wake of the win, announcing that it will add a fifth data centre in Wellington in addition to existing facilities in Tawa, Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton.

Datacom and Revera’s share will be worth between $NZ50 and $NZ250 million over ten years. ®
