Southern Cross Cable ramps up network

Phase H looked after by Ciena

New Zealand cable outfit Southern Cross Cable Networks has secured vendor Ciena for the expansion of its subsea cable network infrastructure.

The cable company is embarking on Phase H of its ongoing network upgrades ramping up capacity by 2T bps in the first half of 2012. The Phase H upgrade will implement Ciena's 40 Gbps coherent optical technologies and represents an increase in current potential capacity to over 7.2T bps between Australia/New Zealand and the USA.

The network expansion will involve a 400G capacity upgrade on each of Southern Cross' seven segments, taking lit capacity on each cable to 1 Tbps and total capacity on the network to 2 Tbps.

Ciena will also supply its 5430 and 5410 Reconfigurable Switching Systems, which offer 3.6 Tbps and 1.2 Tbps of switching capacity for bandwidth aggregation and management.

Meanwhile Southern Cross’s 50 percent owner Telecom New Zealand will move forward with the splitting off the company’s network business. Shareholders have voted in favour of Telecom separating its fixed line access infrastructure business, Chorus so it can take part in the government’s ultra-fast broadband (UFB) deployment .

The remaining new-look Telecom will retain the stake in the Southern Cross Cable. ®
