Flood recedes at Toshiba's Thai fabs

Not the ones that makes disk drives, though

Toshiba Corp expects to crank up Thai production lines early next year at a number of plants on one industrial park as the waters have started to recede.

The nine fabs in the Bangkadi Industrial Park build home appliances, semiconductors and lighting products, but Toshiba disk drives are made in the Navanakorn Industrial Estate Zone – which was also put out of action by the flooding.

"The water level has now receded by about 10-15 centimetres at Bangkadi," said Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, chairman of Toshiba Thailand, according to a report in Reuters.

"Right now we haven't been able to drain the water out because the water outside is still high ... However, we do expect to begin the process by the middle of this month," she added.

Some 48 million fewer drives are expected to be shipped this quarter, leading to warnings from distie sources that the price of the components, which has doubled since the Thai catastrophe, could keep rising.

Thailand is the world's second biggest producer of disk drives behind China, and Toshiba is currently the fourth-largest maker. ®
