NEWSFLASH: Chips cheaper than disks
Platter prices spinning up and away
You better start believing in miracles; Thai flood-caused disk drive shortages are driving up disk prices beyond flash.
Stifel Nicolaus analyst Aaron Rakers brings us the good news after talking to OCZ CEO Ryan Petersen on an investor call.
Rakers says: "Recent HDD/SSD distribution indicates an average 20-25 per cent increase in Seagate and HGST’s enterprise-class HDDs (e.g., 15K.5 73/74GB HDDs nearing approximately $3/GB), which compares to OCZ’s 6Gbit/s SAS Talos SSD at $1.98/GB; single-ported Deneva SAS at about $1.55/GB)."
Wow; these OCZ SSDS are 30-40 per cent cheaper per GB than 15,000rpm Seagate and Hitachi GST disk drives. Say it again; wow. ®
