Oz cloud outfit wins angel backers

Baxter and Bell take on the cloud

Australia's burgeoning cloud investment has had another top-up with OrionVM getting angel dollars from two technology heavyweights. PIPE networks co-founder Stephen Baxter and micro-computing architect Gordon Bell have tipped in an undisclosed investment in the company and will providing mentoring guidance.

Founded by a group of university students in early 2010, OrionVM launched its enterprise grade cloud platform in April which it touts as the world’s fastest network backed storage performance.

OrionVM managing director, Sheng Yeo, said the biggest gain in getting the calibre of Baxter and Bell on board was, “not just money but the vast breadth of knowledge and experience Bell and Baxter bring to the company in establishing this next generation of computing —we call the cloud.”

Bell the former head of R&D at Digital Equipment Corp, is a resident of Sydney and San Francisco and will help the company bolster its international plans. Baxter offers the company invaluable experience in the running of a large and rapidly expanding tech business, in addition to listing, raising capital and selling assets. The funds will allow OrionVM to double staff, triple CloudDC customer usage and explore an international presence.

OrionVM services several hundred customers ranging from ASX listed companies to small startups including Wikia.com, Quotify.com.au (owned by Sensis), Getflight.com.au and DesignCrowd. ®
