Julian Assange’s mother has dubbed the Australian ruling elite as a bunch of “star-struck teenagers” in the thrall of US president Barack Obama.

Christine Assange was among a group of protestors outside Parliament House yesterday while the US President addressed a special sitting of MPs and Senators.

She is currently lobbying the government to assist her in stopping the Wikileaks founder from being extradited to Sweden from Britain over allegations of sexual assault and rape. She wants the Australian government to defend her son's "legal and humanitarian rights" and to differentiate itself from American foreign policy.

Speaking to AAP, Ms Assange said Australia was "going along with a global bully who is now becoming a rogue state. I want this government to grow up," she said.

"We are in the hands of adolescents. If anyone saw that nauseating display at the dinner last night, they looked like star-struck teenagers," she added.

Assange’s mother has campaigned vigorously for the defence of her son's rights and among her efforts has written an eight-page letter to Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd urging him to stop the extradiction.

"This case is not just about Julian. We are at a crossroad in history here with democracy, where internet technology is intersecting with democracy. Which way are we going to go? Are we going to repress all the citizens of the world for speaking out?," she said to AAP.

Earlier the week acting for Julian Assange lawyers filed appeal papers with the UK Supreme Court to fight his extradition to Sweden. The UK Supreme Court will now decide whether or not to hear the case as a matter of general public importance. ®
