Market watcher ayes claim iPad 3 to sport 1536 x 2048 screen

Another analyst has claimed Apple's iPad display makers have started punching out 2048 x 1536 panels for the tablet's next incarnation.

So says Richard Shim of DisplaySearch, a market watcher in an interview with Cnet. An Asian mole recently said LG, Samsung and Sharp have already shipped more than a million of the hi-res screens to Apple and its manufacturer, Foxconn, and Shim concurs.

Shim didn't say how many panels three firms have produced, but between them they should be able to churn out a sufficient number for Apple to release the next-gen iPad early next year.

"I would imagine there would be concerns about supply given the resolution of the display, but you've got three different suppliers at this point. [Apple] should have enough to launch the product," Shim said.

The Asian mole claimed last week that Apple will have 3m 2048 x 1536 displays by the end of November.

Other whispers have it that the iPad 3 will be fractionally thicker than the iPad 2 thanks to the need to accomodate the a dual-light backlight system the higher resolution display requires.

The augmented illumination doesn't spell good news for battery life, and the extra thickness may also be the product of Apple adding a bigger battery to compensate.

Shim reckons the screen will be an IPS LCD, like that on the current iPad, not an OLED panel, as some pundits are hoping for.

At 9.7in, the higher resolution screen has a pixel density of 264ppi - much better than the current iPad's 132ppi, but not quite up there with the 326ppi iPhone 4S "retina display". ®
