Obama steps in as Britney Spears wrestles Page on Google+
Oops Larry, I did it again
Pop princess Britney Spears now has the most followers on Google+, which President Barack Obama's team just signed up to.
Until yesterday, Mountain View Chocolate Factory boss Larry Page had the most people following him on the social network with 744,579 "friends" in his circle.
The Hit Me Baby One More Time star has nearly 750,000 fans on Google+. That's a mere drop in the Web2.0 ocean, however, when compared with her army of followers on Twitter, which stands at nearly 11.3 million, and Facebook with 15.3 million.
But Google will undoubtedly be proud to declare that Page has been upstaged on the platform by Spears.
Meanwhile, none other than the President of the United States of America has joined the Google+
revolution phenomenon site.
"Welcome to the Obama 2012 Google+ page," his team wrote yesterday. "We're still kicking the tires and figuring this out, so let us know what you'd like to see here and your ideas for how we can use this space to help you stay connected to the campaign."
The campaign in question is next year's presidential elections, which Obama is hoping will secure him a second term in the White House.
So far the pres has only picked up a little over 4,000 fans who have connected to the page. But then, Obama has arrived on Google+ just as Americans prepare to smear themselves in buttery squash, cornbread and Turkey juice.
In contrast, Obama has 24 million fans on Facebook and 11.2 million followers on Twitter.
Google will of course be hoping that over time both Spears and Obama amass many followers on the company's identity-farming network.
For now, it would seem that Larry can only dream that – one day – heavy-fringed pop idol Justin Bieber, who has nearly 38 MILLION fans on Facebook, will sign up to the cause. ®
