Foxconn takes to the cloud with US$63m

Apple's go-to factory guys get heavy with data

Apple’s Taiwanese gadget manufacturer Foxconn is moving into cloud computing, announcing that it will invest $US63.3 million over the next five years, in at least two cloud computing facilities.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs, Export Processing Zone confirmed that a cloud technology center and a software research and development site would be constructed in the Kaohsiung Software Technology Park. The Kaohsiung cloud technology center is scheduled to begin construction on December 1 and will be completed in two to three years, the government said.

The Kaohsiung Software Technology Park is part of a government push to transform Taiwan’s second largest city as a regional technology hub. The cloud command centre aims to employ 3,000 software engineers and house three distinct centers: a cloud computing center to be equipped with an internally developed container data centre; a software development centre focusing on cloud computing, and a digital content, security monitoring, and environmental protection; and a technological innovation incubation centre.

Shen Jung-chin, head of the Export Processing Zone Administration, said that Foxconn’s presence in the Kaohsiung Software Technology Park is expected to act as a magnet to attract more high tech companies.

Around 200 technology firms have set up shop in the burgeoning Taiwanese Silicon Valley. ®
