HP tempts Elite computer buyers with capacious Box

Adds online storage to three hardware lines

HP has done a deal with online storage firm Box to offer reduced cost – or free – services to buyers of the Compaq 6200 and 6005 Pro series and Compaq 8200 Elite series PCs.

The deal sees 6200 and 6005 Pro Series buyers getting 10GB of free storage from Box in the first year of operation, and a reduced annual rate for those looking to expand on this. Compaq 8200 elite customers get an even better deal: a year’s unlimited storage and synchronization on the service. Both offers are only available to US customers at the moment, but this may change.

“This is under consideration for international customers, but the first phase will be in the US only,” Kirk Godkin, manager of HP’s Personal Systems Group group in the US, told The Register. “We’re always looking for additional ways to extend partnerships, and everything is being looked at.”

Software to access the Box accounts will come preloaded as a custom application launcher developed by HP and Box, and the hardware manufacturer will also offer technical support for companies looking to set it up. Sadly for existing owners, they won’t be seeing any of this, as it’s for new sales only.

“To be successful in today’s enterprise, businesses of all sizes must provide their end users with the right tools to drive innovation, foster collaboration and increase customer adoption,” Box cofounder and CEO said Aaron Levie said in a statement. “Box and HP are focused on helping redefine the way organizations manage and share information in the cloud. Together, we can empower the next generation of knowledge workers.”

This isn’t the first time HP has got into bed with the online storage supplier. Box was touched to provide 50GB of cloud storage for the TouchPad fondleslab, but with the demise of the platform the two are still looking for a cozy relationship. ®
