Amazon blows $95m on Chinese warehouse

Parks more gift-laden tanks on China's lawn

Amazon is reportedly pumping $95m (£61m) into an e-commerce distribution centre in the Chinese city of Nanning, Guangxi Province.

The Kindle maker inked a deal with the Economic and Technological Development Zone in Nanning on Monday, according to a report in The Shanghai Daily. The warehouse located in the Beibu Gulf Technopark will create 1,000 new jobs and will cover 50,000 square metres - the area of 2.4 microWales, according to The Reg's standard units converter.

With an investment of 600 million yuan, it's expected to generate at least 200 million yuan annually ($31m) for the Seattle-based web biz.

Nanning is in south China, near the border with Vietnam and about 450 miles from Hong Kong. The development zone is described as having "convenient traffic networks and strategic location" 20km from the nearest airport.

Amazon opened its Chinese-specific website in 2004, buying out existing e-tailer Joyo for $75 million. In October last year Amazon dropped the name Joyo from their Chinese operation and rebranded as Amazon China. ®
