Apple iPhone 5 to debut at developer gig

Toss straw into wind, see where it blows. Ah, it's landed on the square marked 'Apple to unveil iPhone 5 in June'.

That's what the Chinese-language paper Commercial Times is saying, quoting Japanese Securities, a local broker, but we'd say neither has cast-iron evidence for the claim.

Apple traditionally unveiled new iPhones - all but the first and most recent, at any rate - at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which takes place in San Francisco every June.

Daiwa, based on talk at the touchscreen technology companies it tracks, believes that's when the next iPhone will debut.

That's a mere eight months from the arrival of the iPhone 4S, a phone that, confounding critics, has proved more successful than its predecessor.

Will Apple release a new design handset so soon? Under the mercurial Steve Jobs, anything was possible. Under the more restrained Tim Cook, the company may a adopt a more measured strategy and wait until the 4S' coalseam has been more thoroughly mined.
