Megaupload honcho sprung from slammer (for now)

NZ court hears 'new evidence', bails boss

Reports are emerging from the Land of the Long White Cloud that Kim Dotcom (formerly Kim Schmitz) has been sprung from prison after being granted bail.

Dotcom, arrested in January in an international operation that shut down the Megaupload file locker site, is accused of heading an operation that conducted copyright violation on a mass scale. The FBI has said the Megaupload business netted more than $US175 million for its principals, including Dotcom.

Dotcom was arrested alongside Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk, all of which had already been granted bail, leaving the boss as the only one still languishing in the slammer.

Kiwi site Stuff now reports that unspecified “new evidence” was put before the court, which decided that bail is now appropriate. The FBI is seeking extradition to the USA for the so-called “Mega conspiracy”. ®
