Russian search biz grabs Twitter's fire hose, sprays everywhere

Yandex inks deal to include tweets in results

Russian search engine Yandex has laid hands on Twitter's firehouse, adding its stream of data to its search results.

Tweets in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Kazakh will pop up in the Yandex Blog Search results, along with top feeds in other languages.

"We are currently concentrating on social networking search. This partnership with Twitter reinforces our effort in this area,” Anton Pavlov, Yandex’s Blog Search manager, said in a canned statement.

“People share news, exchange opinions and discuss all sorts of matters in real time all the time. This kind of information will help us enhance our search results.”

Twitter had not returned a request for comment at the time of publication.

Microsoft's Bing already plays with Twitter's firehouse, and Google once did as well, but it never renewed its agreement with the micro-blogging network after the deal expired in July last year.

Neither Yandex nor Twitter were forthcoming about how much the Russian firm is paying to handle Twitter's hose, but reports suggested that Bing paid about $30m for the privilege.

According to its own modest bio, Yandex is the leading internet company in Russia, with around 60 per cent of the country's search traffic tied up.

However, reports this year suggest that Google is making inroads with the Russian search market, raising its share to 25.5 per cent while Yandex dropped by four percentage points. ®
