A tsunami of complaints about Apple's "The new iPad" – aka the iPad 3 – are filling Cupertino's discussion forums, claiming that the 3G and 4G connectivity of Apple's überpopular fondleslab is bollixed.
"The new iPad has unstable 3G connection" is the title of one forum thread in which the thread-initiator reports: "3G icon is visible and signal is strong but safari tells no connection (other programs don't have connection as well). Switching to airplane mode and back doesnt help and reset (off and on) always helps, but problem appears again after some period."
Other users in the same thread agree. "I have the same issue," says one. "Same here ... [I] even resetted my network settings to no avail," says another, joined by "Same problem" or some variant of the same grievance voiced by others.
There's an international flavor to the posts in that thread, as well: "Same problem here in the UK," "Same here in the US," "i get the exact same thing here in Sweden," "I have the same issue ... in Singapore," "Same problem for me here in Austria," "Have exactly the same problems in Denmark," and "Yes, here in Germany I have the same problem."
Other threads include complaints from users in Russia, Poland, Norway, Australia, the Czech Republic, and elsewhere.
Over in another thread entitled "iPad 3 Why 3G does not work after being on WiFi," there's more of the same. "When I take my iPad 3 out of my house, I have to reboot it to get a 3G connection. The 3g icon shows that it is connected but when I try and access any connection it says no internet connection," says the initiator.
That woebegone user is joined by "I'm experiencing exactly the same problem," "I also get this problem with my iPad3," "Experiencing the same problem every morning," "Having a similar problem myself," "I have exactly the same problem," and "All of you are not ALONE!"
Other threads describe 4G issues, geo-location changes disrupting 3G connections, Verizon-specific wireless issues, and one popular thread entited, quite simply, "The new iPad constantly losing cellular data connnection."
Whether these problems are being cause by iPad hardware, iOS software, network foibles, or simply users who don't quite know what they're doing is not yet known, but some users expressed frustration with ineffective help from Apple support reps.
One disgruntled – and not terribly grammatical – iPad 3 owner summed up the whole kerfuffle as follows:
Apple statements like,
- Just avoid using it or holding that way
- It's normal
- Still in normal working condition
- Still in normal working temperature.
Think all of us should not tolerate for all type Apple excuses anymore."
Add this ongoing muck-up to reports of dodgy Wi-Fi connectivity, toasty operation, and complaints about short battery life, and it appears that the "The new iPad" is having a bit of a turbulent maiden voyage. ®
