Facebook is about "connecting and sharing" - especially now it can help you donate your internal organs, Mark Zuckerberg announced today.
Describing it as "a life-saving initiative", the tousle-haired CEO officially announced a special button for people wanting to tell their friends that they are organ donors.
"Became a organ donor" has been added to the list of health-related life events that a Facebooker can add to their "Timeline" alongside "buying new glasses" and "weight loss". Logging your philanthropic wishes for your internals has been made easier and will automatically sync to your permanent profile information making it easier for your friends to see.
Log that life event!
Zuck said that "broader awareness about organ donation" could go a long way to saving the 18 Americans that die each day waiting for organ transplants. "By simply telling people that you're an organ donor, the power of sharing and connection can play an important role", he said. He meant telling them on Facebook of course.
The new button lets you register to become an organ donor straight from the Facebook platform, with a link from the "life event" page taking you through to donor pages for America.
When Facebook stated that its "mission is simple: to make the world more open", it looks as though by world, it meant your thoracic cavity. ®
