Bought a new Mac Pro? 1-in-100 chance it'll destroy your data
Dodgy drives spark Apple UK recall
Apple is recalling a batch of Mac Pro towers in the UK after a "small number" sold last month turned out to have defective hard disks, Channel Reg has learned. The dodgy drives put fanboys' data at risk, Apple said in its recall notice.
One UK biz boss told us that he was chasing down a small number of the several hundred Mac Pros he had flogged in the past month. He said that the number of recalled computers was in the "single digits", putting the percentage of defective computers at a small but significant 1 per cent.
Another reseller admitted that it is chasing down 14 recalled Mac Pros from their customers out of an unspecified number sold last month. Apple has promised to replace the dodgy Mac Pros.
Apple's recall notice was sent out earlier this week. The fruity tech titan told us that AppleCare had contacted a small number of customers with the following message:
Apple has determined that the hard drives in a small number of Mac Pro systems, built from late March to early April, have a reliability issue that could cause data loss. Our records indicate that the Mac Pro system you recently purchased may be affected. We would like to replace the drive that shipped with your system or, if you prefer, replace the entire Mac Pro system.
