Sky launches movie, sports on demand service

IPTV alternative to Netflix et at

Sky will begin offering pay-to-view films over the internet to non-subscribers tomorrow.

The satellite broadcaster is calling the service Now TV, and it will offer 1000-odd films to rent, including back catalogue content and new releases. 'New' in this context means 'now out on DVD', rather than 'out at the pictures' or even 'premiering on TV'.

No, if you want something more immediate than simultaneous availability with the DVD release - which is what all the other VoD services offer, from Lovefilm to iTunes - you'll need to pony up for a Sky box or a Sky Movies Pass, a £15-a-month add-on for Now TV customers. Sky is offering each Now TV user one 30-day pass for free.

Later this year, Sky will launch a Sky Sports Pass.

Regular film-rental prices run from 99p for old films to £3.49 for a new addition to the Now catalogue. Now goes live tomorrow on PCs and Macs, and on "selected" Android phones.

August will see the arrival of an iOS app. It will be coming to Xbox Live later this summer - Sky has a PS3 app in the pipeline, though it didn't say today when it will be launched. Likewise a version for Roku players. ®
