VCE hires Cisco exec to run the company

Takes nearly a year to fill the role

VCE has finally added a CEO to the top of its management stack after operating without one for almost a year.

The converged infrastructure player - a collaboration between EMC, Cisco and VMware - has lured Praveen Akkiraju, Cisco senior veep and GM for the Services Routing Technology Group.

The new man climbing on board described his new paymaster as a "pioneer" in "defining and accelerating the adoption of the converged infrastructure for cloud-based computing models".

Michael Capellas was VCE chairman and CEO until last August when he dropped the latter part of his title.

He said in a PR statement that Akkiraju has the "business and technical" nous to speed up growth in a market that is predicted to be worth $50bn over the next few years.

The appointment follows a frenzied level of moving and shaking this week across both EMC and VMware, that saw Paul Maritz, Pat Gelsinger and David Goulden move roles.

A VCE spokesman claimed the company is approaching a run rate of $1bn for this fiscal, and with 1,200 employees on board.

He told The Channel that the appointment was a "reflection of the size and projected growth of the company".

Clearly the execs weren't sure last summer whether it could justify operating with Capellas as chairman, Frank Hauk as president and a CEO.

In the UK, VCE's partner roster is still filled with a small band of solution providers - 2e2, BT, Computacenter, Kelway, MTI and Novosco. ®
