BP hires Deutsche Telekom to send email up in smoke

Staff messages to float up into private cloud

BP Oil will push 100,000 staff mailboxes into the cloud after the fuel giant signed a deal with Deutsche Telekom's T-Systems division to reorganise its internal communications.

The five-year contract tasks T-Systems with setting up an internal messaging system for 83,000 BP employees worldwide, an overhaul that will include upgrading to an Exchange 2010 service from Exchange 2003.

T-systems will also enable email access for mobile devices and pack in a suite of collaboration tools from T-Systems' Dynamic Services for Collaboration (DSC) range, including Lync and SharePoint.

It aim to have pushed all 100,000 mailboxes to the private cloud by June 2013.

BP wouldn't reveal how much cash changed handed, but the deal is said to be priced on a pay-per-use model tied to the consumption of the services.

It's the third contract that T-Systems has won with BP. In 2009, the organisation was appointed lead telecoms integrator responsible for BP’s global voice and data services. ®
