World celebrates System Administrator Appreciation Day

Time to buy your BOFH a drink

In a tradition started twelve years ago, the IT community is celebrating another global System Administrator Appreciation Day (SAAD), a time to recognize the talents for your favorite BOFH.

"Let's be honest, sometimes we don't know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember, this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business," says the official website.

Started in 2000 by former AT&T Bell Labs admin Ted Kekatos, SAAD takes place on the last Friday of July and has garnered much support around the world, including from groups like Dell KACE, OpenDNS, nCircle and the UK's Unix & Open Systems User Group. ManageEngine is also looking for nominations for the best admins, with prizes like Google Nexus 7 tablet up for grabs.

In an interview last year, Kekatos said that he was inspired by the invented American tradition of Secretary's Day (although who actually has a secretary these days) and by an advert created by HP showing admins getting gifts for installing printers. The idea has taken off and has even inspired some people to song.

Kekatos suggests that suitable presents for your admin might include the latest smartphone and/or chocolate ice cream. Here at Vulture Central we like to think that every day is SAAD, since we wouldn't have a publication without the herculean efforts of our very own BOFH, but ours prefers beer to ice cream. ®
