No way Moto: Chinese workers protest Google job cuts

Employees claim Motorola violated their contracts

Motorola employees in Beijing and Nanjing were out this morning protesting the job cuts announced by Google earlier this week.

More than 150 people demonstrated outside the Motorola company office in the Chinese capital, after Googorola said that it would be slashing 20 per cent of its workforce, Chinese news website Sina reported.

Outside the factory in Nanjing, workers and former workers were also protesting, claiming that Motorola had breached their employment contracts.

"Use our patents to kill off our brothers," one protest banner read.

A row reportedly kicked off between the police and employees when they tried to seize the banner.

Nearly all departments in China will be affected by the layoffs, according to media reports.

Google announced on Monday that 4,000 staff members would be cut and 94 offices closed. The Chocolate Factory has said the cuts would cost it up to $275m and has promised generous severance packages to those affected.

Motorola said at the time the cuts were announced that it expected the layoffs to help return its mobile-making business to profit. ®
