RIP Psion PLC: You're with Motorola now

Assimilation of UK pocket PC hero is complete

Motorola Solutions - the profitable bit of Motorola that wasn't gobbled by Google - has completed its acquisition of Psion PLC, and can now start integrating the company.

The purchase was announced in June, but it's taken a while to complete despite the £129m offer being unanimously recommended by the Psion board. Motorola will continue to sell Psion's product range, and is making happy noises about utilising the 830 staff still at the London-headquartered biz.

Psion PLC is a long way from the pioneering electronics company behind the Organiser - the handheld computer that largely kickstarted the pocket PC sector - and the company that, argues our own Andrew Orlowski, could have been the UK's answer to Sony. However, the remaining business makes money selling robust devices into vertical markets.

Which is where Motorola Solutions also likes to play, so this is a successful company buying a smaller rival, despite the intriguing history that surrounds both parties.

"Motorola Solutions chose to acquire Psion because of its complementary enterprise mobile computing products and its talented people who understand this highly specialized business," says the statement from Motorola, continuing to explain that integration will start today with details to emerge soon. ®
