Wikipedia boss Jimmy Wales marries Kate Garvey

Tony Blair tips up at wedding in London

Our congratulations to Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, who married Kate Garvey in London yesterday.

Among the guests were former Prime Minister Tony Blair and wife Cherie, and A-list politicians drawn from the new Labour elite, including former Cabinet secretaries Lord Mandelson, David Miliband and James Purnell.

Alastair Campbell, Blair's rottweiler, arrived in a kilt and "played the couple out of the church with his bagpipes". What did they do to deserve this? Other guests included Mick Hucknall, of Simply Red, the model Lily Cole, and Ozwald Boateng, who makes really cool suits.

Garvey was Tony Blair's diary secretary - that's much more important than it sounds - and is now a director at the PR firm Freud Communications.

The papers have two nice quotes, the first from The Sunday Times which unearthed this gem in Tony Blair's memoirs:

"[Garvey] ran the diary with a grip of iron and was prepared to squeeze the ball very hard of anyone who interfered."

And to The Telegraph:

The couple, who have one child, met at the World Economic Forum at Davos, where Mr Wales reportedly asked an aide to track down Miss Garvey, but not to get her details from Wikipedia, in case they were wrong.

Hmm. That detail about the aide has the ring of truthiness to us. And where better to look than Wikipedia for the definition of that word.

You want to know what the bride wore? Of course you do. The Telegraph has a lovely photo of the couple here. ®
