Aussie webmail pioneer gets funding boost

Staying local but launching global

Australian developed cloud based, webmail provider for enterprises, Atmail will be beefing up its engineering team and expanding internationally following a AUD$2 million injection from VC Starfish Ventures. The 14 year old company, founded in the Blue Mountains, was one of the pioneers in webmail and has been quietly building up an international client base from ‘Silicon Beach’ Queensland that includes NASA, FedEx, GlaxoSmithKline and Virgin Atlantic.

The funding boost will be used to invest in the Australian team, drive product development, and expand sales efforts into the US, Asia and Europe.

Kicking the trend of the great Australian tech exodus Atmail’s CEO Ben Duncan, remains committed to operating out of the Australia market and taking on Australian VC funding.

Duncan said, “the funding from Starfish allows us to grow our team of talented developers which means bringing our ideas on messaging to market faster. While Atmail already has a great install-base in the US and Australia, we’ll increase our focus on the US, Europe and Asia, and rolling out our unified communication product to these regions.”

The company has an existing presence in the U.S for sales and support . Last month the company launched its Unified Communications Plus product on Malyaisa’s Yes 4G network, a platform which allows users to make and receive phone calls through a webmail like interface directly in the browser with a single phone number to be used across all devices. It also recently launched into the SaaS model with Atmail Cloud.

Locally the company works with Australian ISPs iiNet, Netspace, AAPT, Westnet, Transact, and Internode.
