Lovefilm does a Wii after rival gets loaded on new Nintendo

Wii U version coming to compete with Netflix 'soon'

Britain’s eight million Nintendo Wii owners now have a reason to blow the dust off their console and power it up once more. Well, at least those of them who also happen to be Lovefilm subscribers do.

According to the Amazon-owned streamer of films and TV shows, it has just released a free app on the console’s online shop. The software will allow subscribers to view Livefilm content in glorious standard definition.

And, for the 40-odd thousand UK Wii U owners out there, a version for Nintendo’s HD console is coming “soon”. Presumably the company has to wait for an exclusive deal struck between its arch-rival, Netflix, and Nintendo to come to an end.

Netflix has offered Wii streaming for some time. Worse - for Lovefilm - the service is already available on the Wii U, pre-installed on the console.

The Netflix app plays HD content on the console - provided it’s hooked up to an HD TV through HDMI - but it will also let to view material on the wireless handheld controller’s 6.2in, 854 x 400 screen.

The Lovefilm app is free, but interested punters will need to fork out at least a fiver a month for the right to access Lovefilm’s streaming service. It may be late to the party, but at least Lovefilm can say it charges a pound less each month than its adversary does. ®
