Flash, cloud boom flings storage startups into piles of money

Cloud gateway, flash = storage slingshots for suppliers

Nasuni, Nimbus, TwinStrata and Whiptail have all announced flying starts to 2013, suggesting it's going to be a quite a year for both cloud storage and flash array technology.

Cloud storage gateway supplier Nasuni said its 2012 business performance featured:

  • 200 per cent growth in bookings
  • Quadruped the size of the enterprise customer base
  • 45 percent growth in average deal size;
  • 177 per cent increase in the amount of storage that existing customers contracted with Nasuni
  • Double the amount of terabytes of storage under management.

Flash array supplier Nimbus said it had shipped more than 1PB of flash storage in December 2012, the bulk of it with its Gemini arrays announced in August last year. At that point Nimbus said it had reached 230 customers. It started shipments in 2006 with its Breeze unified storage disk drive array. Its first all-flash array, the S-class was launched in April 2010 with the E-Class following in January 2012.

We have been told that the December 1PB+ shipped total includes a single 1PB Gemini system shipment. Nimbus' 2012 revenues were 400 per cent higher than 2011's.

TwinStrata, a second cloud storage gateway supplier, said that in 2012:

  • It experienced sequential bookings growth of 35 per cent or more quarter over quarter.
  • Fourth quarter 2012 bookings were more than four times the amount of the same quarter in 2011.
  • TwinStrata achieved 260 per cent growth in unique, paid customers by the end of 2012.
  • It has more than 350 active installations, and manages more than 3PB of capacity in the cloud.

All-flash array startup Whiptail said 2012 saw:

  • 300 per cent annual revenue growth.
  • 130 new customers.
  • A 500 per cent increase in headcount.
  • 3.7PB of shipped flash storage.

Flash and cloud storage are on fire and the flames should be whipped even higher this year. ®
