Tesco dials 999 after Clubcard vouchers are 'nicked' online

Detectives put on scent of alleged account breachers

Tesco has called the cops after Clubcard vouchers were allegedly swiped from its customers' online accounts.

It is feared the money-off coupons, which are earned by using the chain's loyalty card, were stolen after miscreants compromised victims' accounts. Tesco found out about the missing vouchers, thought to be worth hundreds of pounds, after Clubcard holders complained on Twitter and Facebook, and hit MoneySavingExpert.com's forums.

"MoneySavers LOVE Tesco points, and often save up masses to pay for all sorts, from holidays to wedding rings, at a third or quarter of the normal price," web editor Dan Plant said in a canned statement (emphasis his).

"That makes these reports a huge worry for anyone planning ahead that way. Urgently check your online account and, if anything's awry, get onto Tesco to let it know, and tell us too to help us investigate further."

The global giant said that only a very small number of its 16 million Clubcard holders were affected.

"We have launched a thorough investigation into a small number of incidents and referred the matter to the police," a company spokesperson said. "In the meantime, we’d like to ask any customers who believe they’re affected to contact us directly on 0800 591688 so that we can make sure their accounts are up to date.”

Customers claimed they discovered their vouchers had vanished after they logged into their online accounts, MoneySavingExpert.com said. Some were told by Tesco's customer service staff that the coupons had been spent miles away from their homes. A few Clubcard savers weren't able to get into their accounts at all or had the name on their account changed.

Tesco refused to speculate on what sort of data breach may have led to the theft due to the ongoing police investigation. ®
