Amazon goes legit with cloud certification plan

'Enterprisey enough for ya?' bellow Bezos & Co.

Watch out Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Dell, and HP. There's a new reassuringly dull certificate in town, and it's coming for your devs.

Amazon Web Services has launched a global certfication program so that technologists can get something to stick on their CV and use as a lever to extract more cash from current and future employers.

"The AWS Certifications are credentials that you (as an individual) can earn to certify your expertise (skills and technical knowledge) in the planning, deployment, and management of projects and systems that use AWS," the company wrote in a blog post announcing the move.

"Once you complete the certification requirements, you will receive an AWS Certified logo badge that you can use on your business cards and other professional collateral. This will help you to gain recognition and visibility for your AWS expertise."

The AWS Global Certification Program is yet another move by Bezos & Co. into the traditional territory of enterprise IT, and will see the yellow cloud start cranking out a group of devs, admins, and distributed systems wonks with certifications to match.

Initially, devs will be able to persue the "AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate Level". Further certifications for system administrators and developers are planned for 2013.

The Solutions Architect exam will test candidates across four key areas, with the "designing highly available, cost efficient, fault tolerant, scalable systems" category taking up 60 per cent of the examination, "data security" 20 per cent, and then 10 per cent for both "implementation/deployment" and "troubleshooting".

Further information on the exam, including recommended competencies and resources, is available online (PDF). The exams for the certifications are conducted by Amazon testing partner Kryterion in over 750 testing locations across 100 countries.

With these certifications, Amazon is treating its developers as yet another component of its overall ecosystem – by arming them with certification, they can probably get more cash, and in exchange will seed Amazon Web Services' cloudy ideas about IT throughout their enterprises. ®
