Google's Page, LG boss's SECRET confab sparks Nexus 5 rumour

And leaked pix of new smartmobe starts Optimus G2 talk

The smartphone rumour mill is in overdrive again after reports that mobe maker LG is prepping a new Nexus phone with Google.

Meanwhile, separate leaked photos have led to rumours that an LG Optimus 2 handset is in the works.

The South Korean electronics firm's CEO Koo Bon-joon met Google boss Larry Page on his visit to Seoul last week to discuss “ways to improve their business partnership”, sources told the Korea Times.

The paper went on to claim that the two are currently working on a new Nexus-branded Android phone and that LG is looking to ramp up partnerships on TVs and emerging technologies like Google Glass.

This would all theoretically make sense given that the two firms worked together on the last Nexus device, which quickly sold out after launch and even made El Reg’s coveted Hardware Awards 2012 as runner up in best smartphone category. The two also partnered up on smart TV, offering Google TV.

Further stoking excitement, EVleaks released a photo of an unidentified LG-branded generic smartphone sporting a front camera and speaker.

Unlike the Nexus 4 there are no buttons on the front of the device, and the screen appears to be bigger at 5.5in or so wide.

However, the conspicuous LG logo on the front has led some to speculate it could be a successor to the firm’s popular Optimus G handset – which was the first 4G device to sport a Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor when it launched in August 2012.

LG has been enjoying a mini-revival in the smartphone stakes of late and is doing its best to make up for lost time after coming relatively late to the game.

Market-watcher Strategy Analytics singled the firm out last month as a “star performer” in Q1 2013, doubling shipments to 10.3 million and with it third spot in the global rankings for the first time.

LG couldn't immediately be reached for comment. ®
