So you've got a nice virtual desktop stack – wait, here comes DaaS Boot

Duplicated data in GreenBytes-Desktone's torpedo range

Storage supplier GreenBytes has teamed up with desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) provider Desktone to dedupe virtual desktop data and accelerate its delivery to employees' machines.

Desktone provisions and boots virtual desktops from its cloud through partners such as Dell and Fujitsu. Customers can treat their entire virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a subscription service, and not buy any computing or storage resources to run it - merely acquiring the users' devices.

As a result of the aforementioned partnership, GreenBytes and Desktone have produced an appliance that acts as a deduping DaaS gateway to the cloud: this gear is a pre-configured (DaaS-in-a-box) VDI box containing computing and storage resources and VDI software that resides on site but is managed remotely by a cloud provider, making it a hybrid private/public offering.

Desktone offers a customer portal for adding, removing and editing virtual desktops, plus a service provider portal through which they provision and manage their VDI estate.

In effect, if you view PCs and their associated infrastructure as an IT management nightmare you can outsource all that infrastructure (apart from the front-end devices) to the cloud, using the GreenBytes/Desktone appliance as a doorway through which you can do so. That's the promise, anyway. ®
