Election 2013: What does it mean for Australian IT pros?

User group leaders join Vulture South to talk policy and who they favour as Australia's next PM

Podcast Australia goes to the polls on September 7th, when the nation will elect a new government.

At the time of writing the right-of-centre opposition Liberal/National coalition is favoured to form government, replacing the incumbent Labor party.

The two groups differ in important ways for the technology industries.

The most fiercely-contested are is divergent approaches towards building a national broadband network.

The Labor party has also cracked down on temporary foreign workers, who are often sought out because they are a source of skills that are hard to find in Australia.

In this podcast, the Reg explores those issues and more with two special guests:

  • Tristan Goode, CEO of cloud computing company Aptira, head of the Australian OpenStack user group and a director of the OpenStack foundation
  • Craig Waters, head of the Melbourne VMware user group and now an employee at Nutanix

The pair discuss why sorting out employee share options is a critical policy issue, how skills development plans – from both sides of politics – are failing industry and why hell has terrible mobile phone coverage.

Recorded live in the sonically-challenged Vulture South eyrie, the podcast also features APAC Editor Simon Sharwood and Sydney-based Networking writer Richard Chirgwin.
