Twitter just got sh**tier: Natter emitter hit by code critter, fritters web glitter

Party like it's 2006 - because the site's gone back in time

Twitter has been cast back into the dark ages of 2006 after a number of useful functions disappeared from its website without warning or explanation.

A quick rummage around the site shows that the @username autocomplete feature no longer works in the search or new tweet box. And all the photos posted by twits have vanished from the left-hand panels on their profile pages.

The "more" button under tweets, which allowed users to select a number of other functions (such as embedding a tweet), has also evaporated.

Your correspondent tested the latest iPhone version of Twitter to see if that too was affected, but functions such as autocomplete still work on the company's app.

The Register asked Twitter what had gone wrong. At time of writing it had very little to say. A spokeswoman simply told us: "We're looking into it."

Twitter was battling what appeared to have been a separate glitch on the site overnight when a number of peeps had their avatars abruptly switch to "eggs" – the holding image offered by the network when a new person signs up to the service. That particular avatar cock-up has now been fixed, apparently. ®
