Virgin Media gives TiVo users access to Netflix

Set-top boxes will get Netflix app for access to on-demand service

Virgin Media is planning to let Netflix subscribers watch the video-on-demand service through their set-top TiVo boxes.

The cable company announced that the Netflix app would be coming to 1.7 million TiVo homes this year, starting with a pilot rollout this week. Around 40,000 customers have been chosen for the pilot scheme, which will allow them to sign in using their existing memberships.

At the moment, the service still has to be paid for with a subscription to Netflix, but there's potential to offer the content as part of a bundle service if the partnership continues.

"Virgin Media TiVo offers different ways to watch, either subscription or pay per view, all seamlessly integrated for simple, intuitive viewing so there’s a world of great entertainment at your fingertips," COO Dana Strong enthused.

Apps from Netflix and its main rival, Amazon's LoveFilm, are already available on IP tellys and through games consoles. Bundling the services up with pay-TV contracts would be great for cable companies like Virgin and Sky because they would go from rivals to add-ons for the firms. ®
