Best Buy: Bring us your cowering, unwanted Microsoft Surface masses

Store giant intros trade-in deals for unloved Windows 8 tablet

US retail giant Best Buy is taking back unwanted Microsoft Surface tablets under a trade-in programme.

The company that helped launch Surface RT one year ago has added Surfaces to a list of other consumer computing devices you can now trade in.

Best Buy is offering between $79 and $350 to buy back your unwanted first-edition Surface RTs and Surface Pros in an offer that runs from 6 October to 21 October – the day before the Redmond’s second stab at table glory with the launch of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

According to the Best Buy site, here and reported here, you stand to gain a gift card worth at least $200. The trade-in value of the unwanted Redmond touch tabs runs from $78.75 for Surface RT in “poor” condition up to $350 for a 128Gb Pro in “good” condition.

In summer this year, Best Buy was among other retailers carrying Surfaces at reduced prices to try to shift stock. We learned just afterwards how unwanted the Surface RT had been, as Microsoft was left writing off $1bn. ®
