CommVault cooks up sueball-dodging data-sifting cloudy archive shifter
Users can access archived content without dipping into cloud
CommVault is now able to auto-select subsets of data to be archived in Glacier, Azure or Rackspace clouds after adding Reference Copy to its Simpana software suite.
The idea is to automate the selection of data to be archived instead of keeping everything just in case, and to avoid user selection of data. The product should appeal to businesses operating in heavily regulated and compliance-heavy environments and/or litigious areas.
CommVault says Reference Copy could save just 30 per cent of what some businesses archive now.
The software uses Simpana's ContentStore to "collect, organise, index and classify data based on user-defined policies". In effect it's in a virtual repository with ReferenceCopy providing "automated, granular policies for tiering, retention and classification".
Reference Copy provides access to archived content without needing to access the cloud by using Simpana 10’s content indexing and search capabilities for previews.
If you don't want to keep the data on-premise, back-end vaults include Amazon Web Service's S3 and Glacier, Microsoft Azure and RackSpace Cloud Files.
Reference Copy is available now as part of Simpana 10. Read a CommVault blog about it here. ®
