Apple’s update to OS X, Mavericks, has gone rather better than Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 upgrade. Except if you try to use its email client, the prosaically-named “Mail”.
One complainant is cloud email outfit FastMail, a company that offers hosted email. One can point any client at its service, or use webmail.
The former scenario is causing FastMail some issues at present, because it has found that Mavericks’ email client is replicating messages in FastMail’s Junk Mail folder. It’s not only duplicating them, but also replicating mails even after they’ve been deleted.
FastMail’s admins have found some folders with millions of mails in them, replicating fast, and have also had to deal with disks and CPUs being thrashed rather harder than is desirable.
The company’s analysis of the issue suggests that the mail app uses legal IMAP instructions, but in a stupid way.
Exchange users are also less-than-thrilled with Mavericks, noting that Mail does not always collect email in a timely fashion. Some users report that they have to restart Mail to get any email. Gmail is also not playing well with Mail, frustrating users with buggy performance. ®
