Here comes the SAN: HP gives away virtual one

'Course you have to buy a ProLiant server first...

HP is spreading the virtual SAN idea for small and medium biz by including one at no cost with Gen 8 ProLiant server buys.

Its StoreVirtual virtual storage appliance (VSA) turns server’s direct-attached storage into a virtual storage area network (SAN) and is regarded as software-defined storage since it’s sold without storage hardware.

There are limits, we’re told: “HP StoreVirtual VSA is available as a free download to support up to 1TB of shared storage when purchasing an eligible HP ProLiant server.” HP doesn’t specify what the eligibility criteria are.

HP says customers “who purchase multiple eligible HP ProLiant servers can cluster a maximum of three HP StoreVirtual VSA instances for up to 3 TB of highly available virtual storage at no additional cost. 4TB, 10TB and 50TB licenses are available for purchase for those who need support, additional scale or tiering features.” ®
