Telstra, Infinera announce sub fibre build

In the ocean, no-one can hear the gigabits scream

Infinera has scored another win in Australia, with Telstra announcing that it will deploy the company's Intelligent Transport Network on three key submarine cables.

The companies say the rollout will let Australia's incumbent roll 10 Gbps, 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps Ethernet services on its Endeavour cable (from Australia to the US), Testra's fibre pair on the Asia America Gateway (which runs from Hawaii to California), and the Reach North Asia Loop (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea).

The news comes in the wake of Infinera's recent announcement that the same technology has been rolled out by the Australia Japan Cable (of which Telstra is a shareholder).

Telstra cited exponential growth in demand in the Asia Pacific region as the reason for the latest upgrade.

The upgrade is yet more evidence that Australia's submarine market is heating up, with incumbents getting ready to beat off looming competition from new cable builds. Subscription newsletter Communications Day reports that TE SubCom is to be named as build partner for the Trident Perth-Pilbara-Singapore this week at the Pacific Telecommunications Council conference in Hawaii.

The New Zealand-backed Hawaiki Cable (to link Australia, New Zealand and the US West Coast) has also signed TE SubCom for its build. ®
